Carolyn Chism Hardy is an Orange Mound native who is now a multimillionaire. She watched her mother run a house filled with 16 children. Hardy says the principles her mom taught her to overcome poverty translated directly to her success in the business world.
Hardy helped to pioneer the push to ready the Memphis workforce for higher-skilled manufacturing jobs, a move which led to the Chairman’s Circle’s Harvard Tech initiative to train 30,000 industrial workers. That stemmed from her experience leading Hardy Bottling, the former Memphis brewery where she had once served as general manager. She bought the brewery in 2005 for $5 million and sold it in 2011 for $30 million to City Brewing of LaCrosse, Wisconsin.
Hardy founded her intermodal business in 2007 and in 2012, with daughters Jennifer and Whitney, founded Henderson Transloading Services. She is a graduate of Melrose High School and earned a bachelor’s degree and an MBA from the University of Memphis.
